Automotive interiors play a key role in consumers' intuitive perception and in-depth experience when purchasing a car, influencing purchasing decisions and vehicle sales. To encourage the design and development of luxurious interiors, the 2025 (7th) Global Automotive Luxury Interior Design, Development, and Technology Summit and Exhibition will host the "Golden Scale Award" technology competition for interior systems. This competition invites interior professionals to step forward and showcase their expertise, ensuring that excellent designs are discovered and quality products are recognized!

Technology Applied: Development of Bio-Based Ultra-High-Density Leather Base Fabric with Lotus Effect

Jiangsu Beautiful New Material Co., LTD. (B.T.F)

Against the backdrop of China's dual carbon goals, the sustainable development of the automotive industry has attracted significant attention, and the upgrading of automotive materials is particularly important in supporting these goals. Bio-based composite materials, balancing environmental protection with lightweighting, are beginning to gain prominence in the interior materials sector. In the fabric sector, bamboo fiber offers excellent breathability, instant water absorption, strong abrasion resistance, and excellent dyeability, making it an ideal alternative to traditional polyester.

Amid the rapid development of new energy vehicles, green and environmentally friendly artificial leather materials are becoming increasingly popular. In automotive interior applications, driven by environmental protection and lightweighting, artificial leather is becoming thinner, softer, and lighter. Furthermore, to reduce interior odor and VOCs, environmentally friendly water-based adhesives are widely used to bond leather to plastic parts. This places stringent demands on the base fabric:
* The surface must be as smooth and flat as possible while maintaining a certain thickness to ensure the overall leather material is thick and durable;
* During the bonding process, water-based adhesive penetration must be prevented to prevent weakening the bonding effect.

Leveraging its extensive expertise in the leather base fabric industry, B.T.F has developed a bio-based, ultra-high-density leather base fabric solution with a lotus leaf effect that fully meets various customer requirements.

Technical Introduction

1. Recycled Bamboo Fiber Process

The temperature and humidity must be controlled throughout the entire process (25-30°C, 60%-65% humidity) to ensure fiber straightness and the uniformity and strength of the high-count yarn.

2. Ultra-High-Density Weaving Technology

The bamboo fiber yarn is woven using a high-density double-sided weft loom with a needle density of 44 needles per inch.
The weave is an interlocking rib structure with excellent stretchability in all four directions, ideal for covering and shaping surfaces. The high-density weave creates a smooth and delicate surface with no noticeable grain, which complements the current trend for fine patterns on surfaces.

3. Fluorine-free Waterproof Finishing Technology

The use of a highly biodegradable fluorine-free waterproof finish imparts a lotus effect to the base fabric. This is both environmentally friendly and addresses the industry challenge of adhesive bleed-through in traditional base fabrics when using water-based adhesives.

Innovations and Technical Features

1. The combination of ultra-fine bamboo fiber, ultra-high-density weaving, and the self-cleaning properties of a fluorine-free finish ensures the smoothness of the knitted fabric surface.
Ultra-fine bamboo fiber combined with ultra-high-density weaving minimizes surface irregularities caused by loop bending on the knitted fabric surface, resulting in a cloud-like, delicate finish.

The introduction of fluorine-free waterproof technology makes the fabric surface self-cleaning, and the waterproof level reaches ≥4.5. Dust is not easily accumulated during the production process, which further ensures the surface flatness of the fabric and facilitates subsequent bonding processing.

2. The dual use of bio-based and fluorine-free waterproofing materials ensures sustainable development. The fabric is composed of raw materials and process additives. The use of bio-based bamboo fiber and the addition of fluorine-free waterproofing agents ensure the sustainability of the entire production process.

Application Prospects

With the increasing popularity of new energy vehicles and growing environmental awareness, demand for bio-based, ultra-high-density leather fabrics with a lotus-like effect will continue to grow across various automotive interior applications. B.T.F will continue to deepen its research in this niche area to meet market demand and support the industry's sustainable development.

"If one's wisdom is the same as everyone else's, he is not a national teacher; if one's skills are the same as everyone else's, he is not a national engineer." The rapid development of the automotive industry and the increasingly fierce competition have led to higher and higher expectations for automotive products among consumers. They are no longer satisfied with just basic car needs, but are increasingly seeking cars that provide a brand new experience and allow them to "feel the innovation"!
